Greater transparency in flight ticket pricing

Bern, 16.12.2005 - Fact sheet on travel offers as of 1 June 2006From 1 June 2006, the prices advertised for flights must be the total price. Fuel surcharges, airport taxes, security fees and other charges must be included in the total price. The seco information sheet on price indications and advertising for travel offers will be updated accordingly.

In recent years there has been an increasing tendency in advertising for flights and other forms of travel to separate certain cost elements such as surcharges, supplements and fees from the actual price to pay. Examples include security fees, fuel surcharges and airport taxes. This practice means that the price the consumer actually has to pay is often several times higher than that originally advertised.

In order to establish price transparency and clarity with regard to flights and other forms of travel, seco has decided to revise its 1999 information sheet with effect from 1 June 2006 and clearly stipulate the principle that the indicated price should be the total price and contain all cost elements such as taxes, airport taxes, security fees and fuel surcharges. This will apply for all travel offers made by airlines, tour operators and travel agents advertising in Switzerland.
