Federal Council confirms election of Stefan Walter as FINMA CEO

Bern, 24.01.2024 - At the request of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), the Federal Council confirmed the election of Stefan Walter as CEO of FINMA at its meeting on 24 January 2024. Stefan Walter, currently Director General Horizontal Line Supervision at the European Central Bank, will take up his post on 1 April 2024.

The FINMA Board of Directors has elected Stefan Walter as its new CEO. The Federal Council confirmed this election at its meeting on 24 January 2024. Stefan Walter brings a wealth of experience in financial market supervision. For example, he developed the supervision of global systemically important banks at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, where he currently heads the Directorate General Horizontal Line Supervision. Previously, he was Secretary General of the Basel Committee. In that role, he was tasked with coordinating global negotiations to reform regulation and strengthen the system in the wake of the global financial crisis. Stefan Walter is a German national. He holds a Master's degree in International Banking and Finance from Columbia University and is 59 years old.

Stefan Walter will take up his post on 1 April. He succeeds Urban Angehrn, who stepped down in September 2023 for health reasons. Birgit Rutishauser will continue to hold the position of FINMA CEO ad interim until 1 April.
