Federal Council appoints Martin Schlegel as new Vice Chairman of Swiss National Bank's Governing Board

Bern, 04.05.2022 - At its meeting today, and upon the recommendation of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) Bank Council, the Federal Council appointed Martin Schlegel as the new Vice Chairman of the SNB Governing Board. In addition, the Federal Council appointed two Alternate Members of the Governing Board for Department I and approved an associated partial revision of the SNB's Organisation Regulations.

The Federal Council has appointed Martin Schlegel as Vice Chairman of the SNB Governing Board for the remainder of the 2021-2027 term of office. He will take over as Head of Department II at the SNB with effect from 1 August 2022. Martin Schlegel has been Alternate Member of the Governing Board for Department I since 1 September 2018. He has worked at the SNB for nearly 20 years in a number of management positions. He began his career there in 2003 in the Research unit, before serving in the Financial Market Analysis and Money Market units. In 2009, he became Head of Foreign Exchange and Gold. In mid-2016, Mr Schlegel was appointed as Head of the SNB Branch Office in Singapore. Moreover, in 2015/16 he served as an expert at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Since 2010, he has been a lecturer at Basel University. With his wide-ranging expertise and many years of experience in central banking matters, Martin Schlegel has the ideal profile for a place on the SNB Governing Board.

Also today, the Federal Council approved a partial revision of the SNB's Organisation Regulations (SR 951.153), in order to allow up to two alternate members to be appointed for each Department. This measure is designed to ensure that the central banking and operational challenges, which have grown sharply over the past few years, can be met effectively in the future. At the same time, it allows an even broader range of profiles to be represented in the bank's management.

In addition, the Federal Council has appointed Petra Gerlach, currently Head of Monetary Policy Analysis in the Economic Affairs division, and Attilio Zanetti, currently Head of the International Monetary Cooperation division, as Alternate Members of the Governing Board for the remainder of the 2021-2027 term of office.

Petra Gerlach joined the SNB as a researcher in 2004, and worked as an economist in the Research unit until 2009. Following stints at the Bank for International Settlements and as a professor in Dublin, she returned to the SNB in 2014. Since April 2017, she has been Head of Monetary Policy Analysis, and since October 2020, Deputy Head of the Economic Affairs division.

Attilio Zanetti joined the SNB in 1994 as an economist in what was then called the Economic Analysis unit. In 2008, he became Head of Economic Analysis. In April 2020, he was appointed as Head of the International Monetary Cooperation division.

Department I (Zurich) will continue to be headed by Thomas Jordan. Andréa Maechler will continue as the Head of Department III (located mainly in Zurich).

The two serving Alternate Members of the Board for Departments II and III, Dewet Moser and Thomas Moser, will remain in their current positions.

The Federal Council took note of the resignation of Fritz Zurbrügg as the current Vice Chairman of the Governing Board with effect from 31 July 2022, and thanked him for his outstanding service.
