Switzerland and Brazil hold talks on research and innovation

Bern, 15.03.2022 - The fifth Switzerland–Brazil Joint Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation met in Bern on 15 March. The meeting between the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) was held in a hybrid format. The delegation heads, State Secretary Martina Hirayama and Brazilian Vice Minister Sergio Freitas de Almeida emphasised their intention to intensify the countries' bilateral relations in research and innovation.

At the fifth Switzerland–Brazil Joint Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation, delegation members discussed the most recent developments in the research and innovation landscapes of their respective countries. Talks focused on bilateral research and innovation cooperation between Switzeralnd and Brazil, as well as various ways to intensify and expand existing cooperation among researchers and research and funding institutions in both countries.

Brazil is Switzerland's most important education, research and innovation partner country in Latin America. Switzerland also receives support from a Swissnex network active in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The local Swissnex office facilitates increased cooperation between the two countries in its capacity as a member of the Swiss network for education, research and innovation. As the Leading House for Swiss stakeholders' partnerships in Latin America, the University of St. Gallen has also developed a range of cooperation instruments.
Since 2011, the Swiss National Science Foundation has funded more than 140 research projects involving Brazilian researchers. Innosuisse, the Swiss Innovation Agency, also conducts bilateral calls for proposals (CFPs) in conjunction with its partner, the Brazilian Company of Research and Industrial Innovation. The CFPs are for cooperative projects in the area of industrial innovation. Almost 240 Brazilians have received a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for Foreign Scholars and Artists since 1962.
