First COVID-19 analysis in the FSO Cause of Death Statistics

Neuchâtel, 23.12.2021 - In the months of January to March 2020, 18 501 people died in Switzerland. As in the previous year, people died mainly from cardiovascular diseases (27% for men, 31% for women) and cancer (25% for men, 19% for women). In March 2020, COVID-19 was the main cause of death in 10% of men who died and in 6% of women who died. 95% of people who died of COVID-19 were aged 65 or older. These are some of the provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office’s (FSO) Cause of Death Statistics for the 1st quarter 2020.
