Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter to attend opening of European Games on Friday evening in Baku

Bern, 12.06.2015 - Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) Didier Burkhalter will represent Switzerland on Friday evening at the opening of the first European Games at Baku Olympic Stadium. The European Olympic Committee chose Azerbaijan in 2012 to host the games. Unlike other continents, this is the first time Europe has organised a continental games.

During his brief stay in Baku, Mr Burkhalter will also meet President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Swiss delegation at the European Games will be led by Giulia Steingruber, the 21-year-old artistic gymnast selected by Swiss Olympic as flag-bearer for the ceremony. Some 130 Swiss athletes will take part in the European Games from 12 to 28 June.
