Switzerland to participate at the Paris donors’ conference for the Palestinian Occupied Territory

Berne, 14.12.2007 - Switzerland will participate at the international donors’ conference for the Occuppied Palestinian Territory, on 17 Deceber 2007 in Paris. The President of the Swiss Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs will lead the delegation.

France, the EU, representatives of the Middle East Quartet, and Norway will jointly chair the donors’ conference, which will take place this Monday in Paris. The aim of the conference is to contribute to improving the difficult financial and economic situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and to making the institutions of the  Palestinian Authority able to function more  effectively. 

All the major donor states – including Switzerland – have been invited. Switzerland has been committed to supporting the Palestinian civilian population for many years. It has carried out programmes valued at more than CHF 20 million p.a. and targeted on the needs of the Palestinian people within the framework of its cooperation and development and humanitarian aid activities in the region. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) of the FDFA, which is responsible for the projects, maintains a presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
