Families and Generations Survey 2023: initial findings - Two-child model predominant in wish to have children

Neuchâtel, 02.10.2024 - Just over half of young adults would like to have two children (53%). However, there is a clear gap between wish and reality in terms of the number of children people have. In most families, mothers are more involved in childcare than fathers. But many tasks, such as playing with children or putting them to bed, are carried out by both parents. Grandparents also make an important contribution. 75% look after at least one of their grandchildren aged under 13. These are some of the initial findings from the Families and Generations Survey 2023 from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
