Switzerland and Japan commemorate the anniversary of bilateral relations and discuss opportunities for future cooperation
Bern, 07.08.2024 - President Viola Amherd travelled to Tokyo on Wednesday, 7 August to meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. In honour of the 160th anniversary of bilateral relations, the talks focused on the further development of friendly ties between Switzerland and Japan, prospects in Europe and East Asia, and the global security architecture.
The two sides emphasised their mutual appreciation and the desire to deepen relations. President Amherd emphasised that Japan is a key partner in achieving an open, rules-based and stable world order. Among the bilateral topics discussed was the issue of how economic trade and contacts in science and innovation can be further strengthened.
Japan is Switzerland's third most important trading partner in Asia. Economic ties are excellent, but there is a lack of dynamism in trade in goods. Ms Amherd stressed that, from Switzerland's perspective, an update of the 2009 free trade agreement would be desirable. Both sides also recognised the importance of dialogue and pursuit of prospects in strategic areas such as energy and sustainability. The 2025 World Expo in Osaka was also discussed. There, the Swiss pavilion will be devoted in particular to life sciences, environmental protection and artificial intelligence.
International issues revolved around the global security architecture. President Amherd thanked Japan for its commitment at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, held at the Bürgenstock resort in mid-June. She emphasised Switzerland's willingness to continue to play an active role in the search for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The situation on the Korean peninsula and measures to ease tensions were also discussed. Switzerland is a member of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC), whose main task is to monitor compliance with the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement.
During her visit to Japan, President Amherd will also meet with Defence Minister Minoru Kihara and on Thursday will be received for an audience with Emperor Naruhito. On Monday, Ms Amherd travelled to Shinagawa City, a special ward of the Tokyo Metropolis that is twinned with Geneva.
Last week, the programme of the first Swiss presidential visit to Mongolia focused on the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations as well as on new prospects for bilateral ties between the two countries.
