Swiss Health Survey: Tobacco consumption 1992‒2022 - The percentage of smokers has fallen

Neuchâtel, 02.07.2024 - In 2022, 24% of people over the age of 15 smoked. The percentage of smokers has thus fallen by 3 percentage points since the last survey in 2017, prior to which it had remained stable for a long time. The most substantial decrease in smoking rates was observed among individuals with tertiary education. Over the past 30 years, the percentage of heavy smokers (20 cigarettes or more per day) has more than halved. Novel tobacco products or e-cigarettes are particularly popular among younger people. In 2022, 17% of 15 to 24-year-olds reported using these products. These are some of the results from the Federal Statistical Office's (FSO) latest publication on tobacco consumption.

This press release and further information on the topic can be found on the FSO website (see link below).
