Cooperation on military training: Slovenia and Switzerland sign agreement

Bern, 10.06.2024 - The head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports, President Viola Amherd, and Slovenian Defence Minister Marjan Šarec signed an agreement in Bern on 10 June to strengthen cooperation on military training. The talks also focused on the current security situation in the Middle East, Ukraine and the Western Balkans.

The Swiss Armed Forces work with a number of foreign armed forces in the area of military training. The reasons for this interest in cooperation include factors such as technical progress, limited resources, Switzerland's topography and high population density, the exchange of experience and know-how, and assessing one's own level of training. These agreements are compatible with Switzerland's neutrality and can be terminated at any time.

Exchanging know-how and experience

There is an interest in cooperation on both sides. Switzerland can benefit from Slovenia's know-how and experience. The cooperation agreement covers a wide range of areas, ranging from capability building to air-to-ground coordination, insights into new technologies, electronic warfare and cyber defence to military medical support and environmental protection in connection with military activities.

The agreement was approved by the Federal Council on 8 May and signed today in Bern by President Viola Amherd, head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports (DDPS), and Slovenian Defence Minister Marjan Šarec. They also took the opportunity to exchange views on the current security situation in the Middle East, Ukraine and the West-ern Balkans.
