Summit on Peace in Ukraine at the Bürgenstock: Confederation to contribute to security costs

Bern, 07.06.2024 - The Summit on Peace in Ukraine will take place on 15 and 16 June 2024 at the Bürgenstock resort in the canton of Nidwalden. A major security operation is in place to ensure the safety of the event and those attending. At its meeting on 7 June 2024, the Federal Council decided to consider the summit an 'extraordinary event'. This means that the Confederation will contribute to the security costs borne by the canton of Nidwalden.

The Summit on Peace in Ukraine will be held at the Bürgenstock from Saturday 15 to Sunday 16 June 2024. So far, more than 80 states have confirmed their participation in the peace summit, most of them represented by heads of state or government. The main objective of the summit is to initiate a future peace process based on the UN Charter and international law.

Because the summit is taking place against a backdrop of heightened international tensions, a major security operation is being put in place involving the cantonal and federal police forces as well as the Swiss Armed Forces.

Switzerland is obliged to ensure the safety of persons who enjoy special protection under international and Swiss law. At its meeting on 7 June 2024, the Federal Council decided to consider the summit an 'extraordinary event' under the Federal Act on Measures to Safeguard Internal Security. This decision means the Confederation will cover 80% of the cost of security measures taken by the canton of Nidwalden on behalf of the Confederation.

Nidwalden cantonal police are taking the necessary security measures. The situation is being regularly assessed with a view to adapting these measures, in close cooperation with the Federal Office of Police (fedpol), the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS), the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) and the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS). Nidwalden cantonal police have also requested an inter-cantonal police deployment.
